Shihan Mac has been training in Kyokushin for over 50 years.
Starting in Leicester in 1972 he trained for many years. His early instructors included Pete Kisby, Howard Collins, Brian Fitkin and Steve Arneil. Shihan Mac represented England 11 times and Great Britain 6 times in European and World Championships.
Shihan Mac achieved Shodan in March of 1978 under Hanshi Steve Arneil. Shortly after his Shodan grading, Shihan Mac competed in the 1st European Tournament in 1978 and was on the GB team against the USA.
Shihan Mac was British Heavyweight Knockdown Champion in 1982, and 3rd place Kata in the All American Open in 2000.
Shihan Mac has trained and taught all over the world and alongside some of the finest instructors in the world such as Shihan Howard Collins, Shihan Filho, Shihan Cameron Quinn and Shihan Andre Gilbert to name but a few.
Shihan Mac graded to Rokudan (6th Dan) in Romania under Kancho Matsui.
However, in Early 2020 Shihan Mac made the difficult decision to leave IKO as he felt the direction they were going was not right for him. So with help from Shihan Cameron Quinn, made the move to So-kyokushin under Hanshi Diago Oishi. So-Kyokushin teach the Kyokushin that Sosai taught, and the one that Shihan Mac has always taught.
In November 2023 while attending the 2nd World tournament in Japan, Shihan Mac was promoted to 7th Dan by Hanshi Daigo Oishi.
So-Kyokushin UK. What is it all about?
So-Kyokushin UK, which is headed up by Shihan Mac Robertson 7th Dan, was affiliated in early 2020 with So-Kyokushin World Organisation.
With so many Kyokushin organisation changing so many techniques, kata and kumite, Kyokushin Karate is moving further and further away from what Sosai taught. Some organisations have changed so much that they are barely recognisable as Kyokushin anymore.
So-Kyokushin UK will follow the leadership of Hanshi Daigo Oishi and teach Kyokushin EXACTLY as Sosai taught. Hanshi Oishi, being a VERY long serving Uchi Deshi of Sosai, supported by Shihan Cameron Quinn, pour all their expertise and knowledge into their organisation to ensure Sosai’s way of teaching Kyokushin remains true.
So-Kyokushin UK are not averse to new ways of doing things and additional aspects of Kyokushin are welcomed. For instance, the So-Kyokushin UK syllabus teaches take downs and throws. So-kyokushin UK instructors are very proficient in Kobudo and as such will teach these skills at camps and seminars.
We understand that when students/instructors become discontent with radical changes to their style, it would be difficult to choose the right path. So-Kyokushin UK will welcome all good Kyokushin clubs to be part of their organisation and give all the tools needed to make a smooth and hassle-free transition.
Unity, working together and strong leadership are the essential building blocks for a prosperous Kyokushin organisation and one that follows the path Sosai wanted.
